I had my doubts about this adaptor because of the high price! However it is well made and does the job. It is made of good quality plastic, not at all flimsy, and has an inner tube, spring loaded, which extends when you zoom the lens. It is actually pushed forward by the lens as it moves out and retracts with it. Consequently there is no vignetting, whatever zoom position the lens is at. The adaptor is about 65mm in diameter and changes length from about 35mm to 58mm. It locks firmly to the camera body and, in addition to holding filters, imo, improves the handling by providing a grip for the left hand rather like supporting the lens on an slr. Of course it also increases the size of this already chunky ‘compact’. I have used it with a 58mm polariser and a Raynox M250 macro lens which works well. It could also allow the use of NDgrads etc using one of the rectangular filter sytems. On the downside if, instead of using the screen, you use the viewfinder for framing you will find about a third of the view blocked by the adaptor body when at wide angle zoom setting. However it has no blocking effect on the screen view.
As the price pain subsides I am very pleased with this bit of kit. It only gets four stars because of the price. For quality and function I would give five.

A useful gadget that is also compatible with G10 and G11 models., 27 Oct 2010

This accessory may seem like an expensive filter adapter, but it moves with the lens and it means you don’t get vignetting at the wide end. The other accessory lenses that fit are the 250D and 500D close-up lenses. These reduce the minimum focus distance at the telephoto end where the minimum distance is normally 50cm. You can get a bit closer to bugs and flowers without making lighting a lot more tricky. Off-camera flash is necessary as the unit casts a shadow if the built-in flash is used.

The wider compatibility with the G10 and G11 offers some extra flexibility to owners of these models.

Although it isn’t specified on the product page, the box lists it as compatible with the G10 and G11 as well as the G12. Unlike the old filter adaptor for the G10, this one telescopes as you zoom, so it doesn’t cause vignetting on wide-angle shots. It’s springloaded so it opens and closes automatically as you zoom, and the filter threads don’t rotate so it’s easy to use with a polarising filter.

It’s made from plastic, and that includes the filter threads, so you need to be careful not to crossthread them. When fitted it extends 31-49mm further than the lens ring it replaces (W-T, no filter fitted). The outside diameter is 66mm, so it protrudes about 5mm below the base of the camera. That means you can’t sit it flat on a table – the camera ends up tilted back slightly. It also obscures the optical viewfinder, almost covering the entire bottom half in wide, but as you zoom in it obscures a lot less and becomes a slight blur at the bottom left of the VF.

Overall I think I can put up with those niggles, because it’s more compact than the non-telescoping designs and you don’t have to mess around changing the adapter length when you zoom in and out.
